United Way of North Carolina Announces New Grant Opportunity Through the UW Helps NC Fund to Support Recovery in Western North Carolina

Cary, NC -- United Way of North Carolina (UWNC) is pleased to announce the release of a new Request for Proposal (RFP) through the UW Helps NC Fund, designed to support nonprofit organizations located in Western North Carolina providing critical housing-related services in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The fund will offer significant financial support to eligible agencies working to stabilize housing for individuals and families impacted by the disaster in Western NC, with a special focus on the ALICE population (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).

The UW Helps NC Fund was originally established in response to the growing need for community recovery efforts following natural disasters across North Carolina. Most recently, the fund was reopened to help communities rebuild and recover from the destructive impacts of Hurricane Helene.

Grant Details:

  • Minimum Grant Request: $100,000
  • Eligible Uses: Rent assistance, housing repairs, provision of home furnishings, and other housing-related services.
  • Priority Population: ALICE families and individuals: https://www.unitedwaync.org/alice-north-carolina
  • Application Deadline: August 11, 2025
  • Project Period: September 1, 2025 – September 1, 2026

Local United Ways (LUWs) will be prioritized within their service areas, and collaboration between LUWs and other nonprofits is strongly encouraged. In counties without LUW offices—such as Jackson, Macon, and Swain—nonprofits are urged to form partnerships with other local groups, including faith-based organizations and government entities.

“This grant initiative is about ensuring that vulnerable families have the resources and support they need to recover and rebuild safely,” said Sally Gordon, Director of Mission Advancement at United Way of North Carolina. “We are proud to stand with our local agencies to make housing stability a reality for those affected by Hurricane Helene.”

All applicants must represent registered nonprofit organizations in Western NC and must demonstrate a focused strategy to serve the housing needs of those impacted. Grant recipients will be required to track services provided using a centralized client management system and attend mandatory training sessions in late August.
