Company helped expand 2-1-1 service to all 100 North Carolina counties.
United Way of North Carolina yesterday presented its inaugural Power of Commitment Award to Duke Energy during its annual meeting.
“Duke Energy’s philanthropic goal of powering healthy communities is demonstrated through its steadfast support of United Way and the North Carolina 2-1-1 system,” said Laura Zink Marx, president of United Way of North Carolina.
2-1-1 is a free and confidential service that helps people find health and human services resources in their community, including food and housing, counseling and support groups, and services for seniors and the disabled.
“Duke Energy invested leadership and talent to obtain 2-1-1 coverage in all 100 North Carolina counties, especially those most under-served in the southwestern portion of the state,” said Marx.
Additionally, the company provided a matching challenge grant to other corporations to join in offering statewide coverage.
“This innovative approach to achieve sustainable funding worked,” Marx said. “In 2014, the vision of 100 percent coverage was realized for all North Carolina residents.”
Today, NC 2-1-1 participates as a national leader in 2-1-1 initiatives and is embarking on new services alongside state government and statewide service organizations.
“The 2-1-1 service helps connect thousands of citizens across our state with the health and human services they need and provides data for proactive community planning,” said David Fountain, Duke Energy president – North Carolina. “Supporting this service is a collaborative effort with United Ways and businesses in the state. We’re honored to receive an award for those efforts.”
United Way of North Carolina also recognized the 2015 support of Duke Energy employees, who contributed more than $2.5 million to United Way campaigns across the state and provided volunteer sweat equity to projects in their communities, powering tangible results.
